GRE is administered by Education Testing Service (ETS) and is primarily a multiple-choice test that graduate schools use for admission of students into their graduate programs. Subject tests are offered in the following Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics and psychology. Some universities require these subject test scores in addition to the general test when applying to the Ph.D. program.

You can register at late as the day just before the test, but spaces do get filled up. So, it's best to register a couple of weeks before you plan to take the test. Students are permitted to re-take the revised General test only once every 60 days and not more than 5 times in a twelve month period.
